Freemake Musicbox for iPhone lets you stream free music and music videos

Ellora Assets Corporation has launched its first iPhone app with the release of Freemake Musicbox for iPhone. The app provides users with a search tool for accessing and streaming free music and music videos via YouTube to their phone.

Freemake Musicbox claims to support over 20 million tracks, and makes much of the fact it’s completely ad-free and comes with no built-in limits. The initial release is a little short on features, but more expansive functionality -- including support for playlists and a built-in personalized radio -- are "in development".

On launching the app the user is presented with a simple search tool, pre-filled with the #top100 hashtag. Not only does this demonstrate the app’s support for searching by hashtag (a number of suggested genres and trending tags appear whenever the user initiates a new search), but provides users with quick access to the most popular tracks currently available.

Users can search by artist, tag or track name, then use the results as a playlist. Tap a track to start streaming it -- Freemake Musicbox requires a "stable" internet connection -- and after a pause it will start to play.

If users then select the Player tab they’ll not just see the usual playback controls, including shuffle and back/forward, but also a small window displaying the associated music video if there is on. By rotating the iPhone on its side, users can then view this in a slightly larger window.

The app currently searches only free -- and legal -- music videos on YouTube, and promises to filter out poor-quality recordings from search results. It also automatically ranges tracks by popularity, the reasoning being this gives users access to an artist’s best known songs.

Future improvements will include a Favorites Playlist creation feature, for easy access to a user’s favorite music, and the ability to create customized radio stations that can be shared with friends.

Freemake Musicbox 1.0.1.2 is available now as a free download for iPhones or iPod touches running iOS 6.1 or later. Also available for Windows PCs is Freemake Music Box 1.0.
