Krzysztof Kowalczyk has released SumatraPDF 3.0, a major new release of his lightweight and portable PDF and eBook reader for Windows.

Version 3.0 adds support for tabs, allowing users to view multiple documents side-by-side, plus extends support for eBooks and adds a new document measurement tool to the user interface.

SumatraPDF’s most visible change is the new user interface -- gone is the menu bar to be replaced by a single ☰ menu button. Clicking this reveals a single-drop down collapsible list of menu items for navigating the program’s available commands, which are arranged as per the previous release.

The new build also now displays multiple documents within a single window using separate tabs, browser-style. Those who wish to go back to separate windows can do so via the Settings > Options menu -- untick "Use tabs".

Another user interface enhancements sees users gain a new document measurement UI -- pressing [m] pops up a window that displays the current cursor position in points.

Two keybindings have been swapped -- [F11] now operates full-screen mode while presentation mode is accessed via the [F5] key.

Version 3.0 extends support for eBooks to show table of contents and links in the main user interface. Also added are support for displaying comic books in CB7 and CBT format, while CBZ format now supports both LZMA and PPMd compression. Users can now save comic book files as PDF documents too.

The non-free UnRAR extraction library has been replaced with a free alternative, and three new advanced settings have been added: FullPathInTitle, UseSysColors (removed from the main Options dialog) and UseTabs. Finally, the browser plugin has been depreciated.

SumatraPDF 3.0 is available now as a free, open-source download for PCs running Windows XP or later.
