It is that time of the month again when Microsoft releases new firmware updates for its Surface tablets. And this time around the devices for which updated firmware is offered are Surface Pro 3 and Surface 3.
Surface Pro 3, being the oldest slate of the two, has received regular firmware upgrades since June 2014, with one offered just last month, but for Surface 3, June 2015 marks the release of its first firmware update. Here is everything that is new.
The Surface Pro 3 firmware update is actually the smallest of the two, with only three major changes listed by Microsoft. There is an update to its UEFI (new version is 3.11.950.0) which adds support for new Windows 10 features, updates to the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth drivers (new version is 15.68.3091.193) which are meant to improve stability and connectivity, including download speeds, as well as an update to the AHCI controller driver (new version is 9.4.0.1028) which should lead to a more stable deployment methodology.
The Surface 3 firmware update, being the more comprehensive of the two, comes with twice as many major changes. One of them relates to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, featuring the same improvements as mentioned in the paragraph above for the Surface Pro 3 firmware update (new version is 15.68.3091.193).
There are four more driver updates, which improve the audio performance and experience (new Audio Device driver version is 603.9600.2563.61816), the camera's photo and video quality (new Camera driver version is 20.9600.3444.120), and display stability and graphics performance (new HD Graphics driver version is 10.18.14.4175). The fourth driver update is for Surface Pen Settings (new driver version is 4.0.112.1), and enables new functionality in the Surface app (if you do not have it, it can be downloaded from Windows Store).
And last but not least, there is also an update for Surface System Aggregator Firmware which is meant to improve the user experience while a Surface Cover is connected to the tablet.
The Surface Pro 3 and Surface 3 firmware updates can be downloaded and installed using Windows Update. Microsoft notes that these updates are being rolled out, so it may take a while before they are available for all Surface Pro 3 and Surface 3 devices. To check for availability, go to Windows Update under Control Panel.
